Asynchronous Job Architecture for Heavy Portfolio Compute

Decomposing institutional portfolios across multi-factor models, historical drawdowns, sector attributions, and tracking error constraints requires substantial computational processing. Executing synchronous HTTP requests for portfolios containing hundreds of securities introduces significant operational risks, including client connection timeouts and dropped TCP sockets.

In accordance with IETF RFC 7240 guidelines for asynchronous web services, the Parallax REST API decouples job creation from computational execution. Long-running analytical workflows execute as background jobs, providing client applications with predictable latency and resilient job state management.

Submitting Holdings and Handling HTTP 202 Accepted

To start an analysis, client systems dispatch an authenticated POST request to /v1/portfolio/analyze. The payload defines asset identifiers in Reuters Instrument Code (RIC) format, portfolio weights, benchmark selections, and rebalance parameters.

Upon receiving the payload, the API validates the schema and returns an immediate HTTP 202 Accepted response containing job tracking coordinates:

    • job_id: A unique UUID tracking the compute task.
    • status: Initialized as "pending".
    • check_url: The relative endpoint (/v1/jobs/{job_id}) designated for status polling.
    • estimated_duration_seconds: An anticipated execution window based on holding count and benchmark complexity.

    Implementing Polling with Exponential Backoff

Because the Parallax platform operates on a deterministic polling model rather than server push webhooks, client systems manage job lifecycles by polling the designated job URL.

To optimize network overhead and prevent rate limit exhaustion, client integrations should implement an exponential backoff polling pattern:

    • Initial Delay: Await 2 to 3 seconds before dispatching the initial GET request to /v1/jobs/{job_id}.
    • Interval Expansion: Progressively increase subsequent query intervals (e.g., 3s, 5s, 10s) while the job returns "status": "pending" or "processing".
    • Completion Handling: When status transitions to "completed", the response payload delivers the full factor exposure matrix, sector allocations, and historical return series.
    • Error Recovery: If status reports "failed", detailed validation or calculation error codes allow the client system to log issues and retry.
    • Result Expiration: As specified in the API contract, completed jobs expire after 30 minutes, requiring clients to persist analytical results promptly upon job completion.

Complete integration patterns and client implementation guides are documented in the Parallax developer guide.
